Love this! Glad to see others are considering some of the less-represented consequence of a digital age. Even though the shift to streaming has a lot of positives, the missing relics of physical media are a sad downside. Makes me think of the Friday afternoon Blockbuster ritual!
I just discovered your newsletter due to my habit of checking what my new subscribers read.
I'm working my way through your archives (I'm already a big fan) and wasn't planning to start a conversation with you until I was current.
But I couldn't pass this post without commenting because I was amused by the whole premise.
You see, I'm a bit older than you and didnʼt grow up able to hold a movie. We held TV Guides to let us know what we could watch if we were home at just the right time and received the correct channel with minimal interference.
It wasn't until I was in college that you could hold or own a movie.
I did, of course, embrace that, and even now have a room with far too many Blu-Rays in it. And I prefer Fandango/Vudu where I own movies over subscription streaming like Netflix.
So while I understand the concerns expressed, there's a lot to be said for not collecting too much physical stuff. As a Christian, I can see a good argument for not storing up treasures of entertainment! Though I myself have been and am currently guilty of doing so. 😂
Looking forward to continuing through your Archives and enjoying more of your work!
I greatly appreciate your emphasis on embodiment. Can waving that banner. It’s importance will only grow in the years ahead. Really enjoy your writing!

Thanks for sharing, Martin! I truly miss walking through movie stores. Thanks for helping us reflect on the “missing relics”
